Monkstone Knitwear

Insanely cosy looking jumpers from this delicious, brand-new knitwear company, based on a farm in Pembrokeshire. The top jumper here has two little buttons on the back, and is £190; the second is knitted from undyed Dorset and Welsh Black Mountain wool, and is £180. They will see you through the coldest winter. Esk Valley

I'd like to weather this winter in one of these Esk Valley jumpers, handmade in Scotland's only organic wool mill. Picture: Esk Valley.

The Cloth Shop

These Indian wool shawls - herringbone wool with embroidery - are beautiful. From the amazing The Cloth Shop on Portobello Road. Picture: The Cloth Shop.

Wood & Wool Stool

Dutch designer Ingrid Jansen is the queen of crochet, and under the name Wood and Wool Stool she makes charming blankets, reclaimed-wood stools with crochetted seat-covers, adorable knitted bunting and garlands, and these insanely sweet hangers for baby clothes. Pictures: Ingrid Jansen, used with permission.

Black Sheep

I know it's the wrong time of year for them, but I do love these mittens from Black Sheep (although it's probably the packaging that sells it, if I'm honest). They're knitted from British wool by local folk in Norfolk. Black Sheep do seriously chunky jumpers and flannel nightshirts and bars of wool-fat soap, too. Pictures: Black Sheep.

Primoeza

I am absolutely in love with this Australian knitwear company, Primoeza, from Elizabeth Rayman Yong. She seems to have very few stockists outside Australia, with none at all in Europe, but you can buy her beautiful jumpers here and see more of her lovely work on her blog.
Discovered via Ermie's blog, which was in turn discovered via wikstenmade. Pictures: Primoeza.

Gudrun & Gudrun

Gudrun & Gudrun are two women from the Danish Faroe Islands who make handknitted jumpers and cardigans from organic, undyed (expensive) Faroese wool - a wool which is naturally very oily, so the jumpers are practically waterproof. Helena Christensen loves them, apparently.

Huxley

Huxley's range of merino jumpers and cardigans, socks and belts, in upliftingly bright colours like ripe tomato, raspberry and cobalt are all made in Britain and are exceptionally cheerful. I think their cardis would look great on girls; I am obviously sold by the little H embroidered on the arm.

Waddler

Absolutely enchanting clothes for children up to age five, made in Bolivia from baby alpaca, by Marina Scrymgeour's company, Waddler. Her knitted bombachos and wolf and bear jumper look especially cosy.

Mango

I wandered into Mango on my way back from lunch today, and was quite tempted by this flecky-orange cardigan (it's better up close) and soft, oatmeal jumper (which could pass for APC I reckon) for under £30 each.

Ruth Cross

Talking of woollies, knitting supremo Ruth Cross will make you this beautiful dress to order, for £230, in any one of seven colours (although I think the colour the model is wearing is the nicest). I love the thread-through belt. It's completely hand-knitted lambswool, and one-size-fits-all.

English Weather

Gohar Goddard's nicely named label English Weather specialises in the kind of cashmere jumpers I'd wear to shreds (if the moths didn't get to them first). Really, really good quality (with a price to match) and warm as toast - designed for English weather, in fact. Her children's line, Spinning Tops, is equally delectable, and for sale at Couverture, but nowhere online.

Capucine dolls

This a weird thing to say, I know, but Capucine dolls have really good dress sense. They're made from vintage fabrics and cashmere, and are stuffed with lavender - designed to hang in the most fashionable wardrobes. I love their chunky cardigans and woolly tights. Available exclusively from Browns.

Smith and Coates

Sarah Coates's sweet, homespun jumpers and tunics for children are made from recycled woollens that she has hot washed, recut into new shapes, and finished with crocheted pockets and vintage-fabric trims.

Lizzie Sharp

I realise many would be horrified by Lizzie Sharp knits - featuring ducks and goats and tulips and boats, and more besides. Dotty aunt wear, I hear you say. But, personally, I LOVE them. This jumper makes me happy just looking at it.

Cooking Apple

Nell Harvey's jumpers and cardigans for children and adults are hand-knitted in the Cotswolds and are inspired by "forgotten styles", designed to last. Everything is quite rustic and charmingly wonky looking. Her sleeveless jumpers for grown-ups, particularly, are the sort of thing I love.

Electronic Sheep

Terrible name, nice bobble hats.

Quinton & Chadwick

Beatrice put me on to this 10-year-old knitwear company, Quinton & Chadwick, run by Jane Chadwick and Jess Quinton. All their comfortingly chunky jumpers and cardigans (these two, pictured, have my name on them) are hand-made in England, by small co-operatives of women knitters.

Judith Harvest

Officially the most the incredible, beautiful, joyful and happy-making cardigan I've ever seen. It's Danish, obviously; knitted by Judith Harvest and shown online by her proud granddaughters. Discovered on Elena Gold's blog.

Great English Outdoors

Shetland-wool mittens and an exceedingly natty knitted waistcoat: two more things I'd like to own from my favourite shop on the planet.
